Watching the most recent trends in the masterbatches (i.e. color concentrates) industry , the most notable ones seem to me , that polypropylene (and for some other reasons PVC) did not bad , even considering this time at least as a "road bump" in the upward trend of the growth curve of color concentrates. For obvious reasons , namely lacking the volumes of the automotive industry , the most significant loss came to polyamide , the winner of the last years -for this and other reasons , let 's have closer look into polypropylene and the color concentrates in polypropylene. The amazing history of the polymer ,,polypropylene" is even more astonishing , if we consider the short ,,lifetime" of polypropylene starting in 1954 with the first experimental products of G. Natta Since the demand for Polypropylene (PP) in general continues to amaze even optimistic expectations and since our world is becoming more and more colourful, it seems only logical to have a deeper look into masterbatches for PP applications. Looking at the numbers (Fig. 2) shows , that the applications driving growth in polypropylene are mostly in packaging — followed by the other major driving force , the automotive and the "white" (dishwashers) industry. Looking closer into the packaging industry (Fig. 3), the biaxially-stretched oriented polypropylene film (BOPP) becomes very interesting , first as a major driving force for growth and second as a very demanding application for the target of our topic of the day - the color concentrates in polypropylene. Given film thickness in the area of 10 μm or less with current 71ayer-technology - the challenge for excellent pigment dispersion for this application becomes very obvious. This workshop is a perfect opportunity to have a comprehensive look at what machine manufacturers and raw material producers can offer to bring you in a favourable position to come up with the new challenges. We, from Clariant's Pigments & Additives Division , can offer you effective, compatible and tailormade dispersion aids to improver your pigment dispersions - as well as precoated pigments to make your dispersion work easier as my collegue will report. But before talking about improvements we need to define the present state-of-the-Art.
