In order to reduce the cost of solar cells, a new manufacturing concept was introduced in the Helianthos Project: monolithically interconnected solar modules, based on amorphous silicon (a-Si), are manufactured in a roll-to-roll process on a temporary metal substrate. Subsequently, the laminate is transferred to a permanent plastic substrate after which the temporary substrate is removed. In the Helianthos pilot line initial efficiency values of 6.1% have been reached on 30 × 30 cm~2 modules, while 60 cm~2 modules cut from the 35 cm wide foil showed a stabilized efficiency of 5.8%. In this paper, we also present climate testing results on the 30 × 30 cm~2 modules.
