A precision gauge block comparator with 100 mm measuring range is developed to calibrate secondary gauge blocks. A secondary gauge block is generally calibrated by comparison measurements through transference of the length of a master gauge block. Because the sensor has high accuracy and short dynamic range, the comparison is generally made between two gauge blocks with the same nominal length. Therefore when we calibrate a set of gauge blocks, we need the same set of reference gauge blocks. To overcome the limitation of matching two gauge block sets, it is necessary to extend the sensor's dynamic range. So we combined a laser interferometer with two parallelograms which have inductive sensors. In this paper, a laser interferometer based, direct reading gauge block comparator will be described.
