Abstract: The potential suitability of the Fabry-Perot and Bragg grating fiber optic sensors will be considered against a set of criteria for practical use with Smart Structures. Particular attention will be given to a number of key issues, such as: interrupt immunity, apparent strain, sensitivity, response time, structural integration, optical interfacing minimal perturbation and sensor performance lifetime. Some of our development of fiber optic sensor for use with smart structures will be reviewed in the light of these considerations.!23
