Under the framework of study project MED96/052 "Distribution, biology and biomass estimates of the Sicilian Channel anchovy", a hydroacoustic survey were carried out on the continental shelf off the southern Sicilian coast (surveyed area - 3,200 nm~2) during the peak of anchovy spawning period. Different sources for the relationship TS[dB]=f(L)[cm] were used, in order to obtain separate biomass estimations of the most abundant small pelagic species (namely, sardine, Sardina pilchardus and anchovy, Engraulis encrasicolus). The anchovy biomass evaluation produced a result of about 6,500 t, approximately one third of sardine biomass. The spatial structure of the two co-occurring populations was investigated by standard geostatistical techniques. Sardine show more small-scale variability and less spatial structure, suggesting a greater pa tchiness of this population compared to anchovy.
