The synthesis of several types of organic intercalates of Mg-Al layered double hydroxides are described. The materials are made by co-precipitation. Anions considered are benzoate, benzenesulphonate and phenylphosphonate. The crystallinity of the products depends on the MG/Al ratio within the hydroxide layer. At high Mg/Al values competition with nitrate anions during synthesis inhibits incorporation of the organic anion. In competitive uptake experiments the doubly charged phosphonate anion dominates.
