Ultrasound in medicine has been one of the most active topics of ultrasonic engineering over the last 50 years. High intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) has attracted great attenuation only in recent years mainly for its application in ablating tumors. The main mechanism of tumor ablation is thermal necrosis ( > 65℃) of targeted tumor tissues by HIFU, in short exposure times. The surrounding tissues remain undamaged. A series of studies of HIFU in medicine have been done and some technical requirements in producing HIFU are proposed, one of them is how to decrease the ratio of the long to the short axis of the elliptical focused region of a HIFU transducer.
