The near-future realisation of Supervisory Control for all vehicle systems will allow a higher degree of complimentary integration between the currently isolated powertrain systems. This paper overviews the main opportunities arising from improved powertrain control facilitated by this emerging control hierarchy and provides a broad review of current and future control strategies.
