Three-way catalysts are a vital component of many vehicle emissions control systems. Under appropriate conditions the catalyst can compensate for relative oxygen excess or deficiency in the feedgas air/fuel ratio, resulting in high conversion efficiencies. To maintain these conditions, and to monitor catalyst health it is necessary to monitor the amount of stored oxygen. Since this quantity cannot be measured directly, both catalyst control and diagnostic strategies are dependent on oxygen storage models which must also be sufficiently simple to execute in real-time. In this paper a family of such models are described and compared within a common framework.
