There are now three commercially available types of hydromechanical powersplit transmissions, following the announcement of the Steyr tractor CVT, joining the CLAAS HM8 and the Fendt Vario. Hydromechanical transmissions utilise the well known variable ratio benefits of hydrostatic pumps and motors combined with an epicyclic split path arrangement. This can reduce the proportion of power flowing through the variator, with consequent improvements in overall efficiency. Although the first application for these stepless transmissions has been in the tractor environment, these types of stepless concept have possibilities ins ome on-highway applications. These transmissions have complex powerflows which produce some unusual effects; on efficiency for example. This paper illustrates how Boeing EASY5 Dynamic Simulation with Ricardo Powertrain library can highlight many aspects of powersplit performance, permitting a valuable insight into the transmission's dynamic behaviour. The paper pocuses on a single application, an urban refuse collection vehicle; and a single test cycle. Three types of typical powersplit transmissions have been installed in the vehicle and are compared for their performance in terms of efficiency and fuel consumption.
