Trends and Variability Analysis of Runoff Time Series in the Tarim River Basin

Tarim River lies in the southern Xinjiang autonomous region, which is the longest continental river in China. The trends of annual runoff from 1957 to 2000 were analyzed by using the Mann-Kendall test and t-test and the reasons of trend were analyzed for the mainstream of the Tarim River. Wavelet analysis was used to investigate annual runoff at multiple time scale. The results indicate that annual runoff exhibited increase or no trend in the headstream, decrease trend in the mainstream that is caused by human activity. The main period of the runoff variability in the Tarim River is observed and the annual runoff exhibited different wet period and dry period variability at different time scales.
