Water Quality Characteristics of Urban Surface Runoff in Beijing

Beijing is faced with dual pressure brought on by the shortage of water resources and water environment pollution, and thus, it is necessary to study the quality of the annual runoff in the city. In this paper, we investigated the water quality of runoff from different rain harvesting surfaces (i.e. roofs, streets and sunken-lawn) as potential sources to augment city supplies. Results indicate that the main contaminants in runoff are organic compounds and suspended solids. NH_3-N, Permanganate Index and volatile phenol of runoff from roofs were all beneath the criteria of Class V. The quality of runoff from sunken - lawns was quite good, except the content of NH_3-N was higher than the criterion of Class III. The COD from the road surface was more than 493. 5 ml/L at the initial stage of the runoff, and it deceased asymptotically to a lower level with increasing rainfall duration (i. e. time). In a conclusion, runoff from roofs can be used as city municipal and domestic water except during the initial stage of runoff, while runoff from road surfaces can not be reused directly.
