Regional Floods Modeling in the Three Gorges of the Yangtze River

The regional floods occurred in the Three Gorges which is a concentration zone of rainstorm, have most important effect on the safety and operation of the Three Gorges reservoir. Toward forecast of the regional floods, a distributed hydrological model based on characteristics of watershed geomorphology has been developed, which can describe the spatial variability of topography, land use, soil properties as well as rainfall. The present sparse raingauge networks and other factors in this region bring uncertainties into the floods modeling. In this paper, the sensitivities of flood response to the spatial variation of rainfall are also addressed, using raingauge data combining with weather-radar data. The results show, though there are 78 telemetry rain gauges in the Three Gorges, it is not enough to represent the spatial variability of rainfall in some mountainous area. Applying the radar data combining with raingauges to model, it is available to improve greatly the accuracy of modeling.
