This paper presents an experimental analysis of the two-phase flow structures in a circulating fluidized bed cold pilot. This study was conducted in the dilute zone of the riser with low solid recirculation rates using the Laser sheet technique associated to image processing and the phase Doppler particle sizing technique. The three-dimensional structure of the gas-particles flow was found to be characterized by particle aggregates and gas pockets propagating from the bottom to the top of the riser. A schematic description of the particle cluster formation based on time series images of the diphasic flow cross sections is proposed. Transversal dimensions of gas pockets were determined by image processing on horizontal cross section images for three fifferent solid size distributions. The aggregate and dilute behavior are showed up with the second technique.
