The numerical studies required for standard operations and the analysis of the anomalous behaviour of dams are often underestimated by a significant number of operating technicians with wide experience in dam construction. This may be due to improper use of such studies in the past and, additionally, to the need to use values for the modulus of deformation of dam concrete that are lower than the actual modulus of deformation of the material (which can compromise the credibility of the approach). This paper sets out the definition of the main parameters affecting these modifications (and how they affect them), so that from the modulus of deformation of concrete as a material, obtained experimentally, we can obtain the structural value to be used as representative of the block or a part of it. This methodological approach takes into account the type of dam (gravity, arch), the construction sequence, and any delayed effects.
