A case of temperature control of an actual large RCD dam is investigated in this paper. The dam that has a volume of approximately 2 million cubic meters is designed to prevent thermal stress cracking in detail. Temperature of concrete in the dam has been monitored by optical fiber sensor system since construction time. According to the thermal data, temperature of concrete placed in summer was higher than that of in winter. The difference of temperatures had been remained for many years. The temperature of internal concrete rose for a longer time and reached higher than expected from adiabatic data of laboratory tests. Changing of temperatures in the dam can be simulated by two-dimension FEM. The simulation shows vertical tensile stresses on surface concrete during construction time and the stresses decrease by time and by reserving water.
