The present experimetns assess the feasibility of employing a recirculating seawater system as an alter native to conventioanl sea-cage culture of sea bream (Sparus sarba). SUccessful seawater recirculation with minimal water exchange was achieved by using a gravel type bacterial flter and a sed8imentation filter. During the 250 d grow out period, ammonia and nitrite levels wee kept low. Fish maintained in the recirculation system sustained rapid growth with minimal levels of stress indicators (serum glucose and cortisol). Fish reared without recirculation exhibited high levels of serum glucose and cortisol and died within 40 d. These data suggest that culturing sea bream using a seawater recirculation system is higly feasible.
