The handling practice and quality control activities from harvest to market of fresh/chilled fish caught by the artisanal subsistencesurplus fisheries in Morobe Porvince are described. The quantity of fish landings in 1994, its composition by market category and information on the present marketing system at the official landing station Voco Point, Lae, are presented Important aspects of handling such as the use of ice and adequate contaiers are discussed. A grading scheme for the quality inspection using sensory evaluation of the landed fish intended for domestic consumption was introduced.
