This paper introduces formic acid based pulping technology developed in Finland i.e. the Chempolis process. The paper discusses the chemistry of the process, structure, machinery as well as economical aspects. The concept of an effluent free pulp mill is demonstrated. The process composes of three major stages; delignification, bleaching and recovery. In acidic delignification the dissolution of silicon is prevented, while the nutrients are dissolved and the hydrolysis of xylan can be controlled. To minimize the cost of recovery, cooking chemicals were selected on the basis of three key organic elements: carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. Alkaline TCF conditions were designed for bleaching to enable the recovery of filtrates. The process is based on sustainable production of pulp from renewable resources in a closed system. Dissolved organic material is used as biofuel to generate energy for the mill. Also a good quality fertilizer is created in the process for the cultivation of raw material. Due to simplicity of the process design the economy of the mill is attractive.
