In this paper, preliminary study on the laccase/mediator system(LMS) biobleaching of bagasse kraft pulp was carried out. Laccase was produced using a selected strain of Panus conchatus. Activity of laccase was measured with ABTS as substrate. A new mediator ―N-hydroxyacetanilide(NHA) was synthesized by reaction of hydroxybenzenamine with acetyl chloride. Laccase in the presence of NHA and oxygen was used in the bleaching of bagasse kraft pulp. The effects of laccase and mediator dosages, oxygen pressure during LMS treatment on the delignification rate, pulp brightness and viscosity were investigated. Xylanase in the bleaching sequence after the LMS improved the final brightness of peroxide bleached pulp, but before or together with the LMS, it had no benefit. The results indicate the LMS biobleaching is a high efficient, non pollution bleaching process. Bagasse kraft pulp could be bleached to a brightness of 80%ISO after LMS treatment, alkaline extraction and peroxide bleaching with 2% H_2O_2.
