A new cushioning control algorithm, based on sliding mode control, has been developed for a pneumatic cylinder. In the proposed pneumatic cushioning system, low-cost 5/3-way ON_OFF valve has been used. The inherent robustness property of the sliding mode controller makes it easier to select the switching gains of controller. Only one feedback signal(position) is used. Velocity is calculated from the sampled position signals, acceleration is not used. Two end contactless potentiometers take the place of the usual long distance contact potentiometers. The cost of the system is decreased. The results of the experiments should achieve the conceived performance in spite of the uncertainty environment disturbance.
