In recent times sequestration of carbon dioxide (CO_2) into unmineable coal seams has been investigated extensively, including field trials in USA, Canada, Japan and Poland. Economic feasibility studies have indicated that the cost of sequestration can be offset to some extent by harvesting the methane (CH_4) in the coal seam. Besides issues with injectivity of low permeability coals, the long term safety, such as potential leakage of the sequestered gas, needs to be assessed. This requires an understanding of the geomechanical behavior of black coal. Some initial studies suggested that CO_2 may have a softening effect on coal. This paper outlines some experimental results obtained in the investigation of the effects of CO_2 on the strength and deformation properties of black coal. Preliminary laboratory results obtained from acoustic emission and standard stress strain plots indicate a softening effect of CO_2 on black coal under uniaxial compression test conditions.
