Ceramic fibers of Si-Ti-C-O were heat treated in air to produce an oxide layer on the surface, and then hot pressed to produce a dense body containing a fiber volume fraction of approximately 80%. Longitudinal tensile data was generated at 23℃, 1000℃, and 1150℃ to characterize the stress-strain behavior. Results revealed that at 1150℃ this composite experienced a reduction in strength of 28%. Fatigue tests at 1000℃ and 1150℃ were conducted to evaluate the high temperature durability of this composite. The fatigue testing revealed that this system had a similar stress run out level for both temperatures, but exhibited evidence of high temperature oxidation and intermediate temperature embrittlement.
