Mechanical Behavior of a Si-Ti-C-O Fiber-Bonded Ceramic Material

Ceramic fibers of Si-Ti-C-O were heat treated in air to produce an oxide layer on the surface, and then hot pressed to produce a dense body containing a fiber volume fraction of approximately 80. Longitudinal tensile data was generated at 23 deg. C, 1000 deg. C, and 1150'C to characterize the stress-strain behavior. Results revealed that at 1150 deg. C this composite experienced a reduction in strength of 28. Fatigue tests at 1000 deg. C and 1150 deg. C were conducted to evaluate the high temperatrire durability of this composite. The fatigue testing revealed that this system had a similar stress run out level for both temperatrires, but exhibited evidence of high temperature oxidation and intermediate temperature embrittlement.
