Burgeoning interest in the preservation, display and operation of historic ships, coupled with steady improvements in therntechnical resources for looking after them, have helped to catalyse many new preservation projects and exacerbatedrnpressure on the limited sources of funding for such work.rnThe United Kingdom is not alone in having less public funds to support such projects than are needed to satisfy allrndeserving applicants. To achieve consistency and objectivity in supporting such projects requires up-to-date and accuraternknowledge of what vessels survive in each category. Decisions on prioritising support for such work need to be based onrnaccurate and up-to-date information on what survives, where and in what condition.rnIf concessionary rates on VAT, harbour dues, fuel duty etc are to be granted to the owners and operators of historic ships,rnauthoritative lists of the vessels entitled to benefit are clearly required. For these and other reasons, a sound andrnrespected registration process is a crucial management tool.
