Summary form only given. Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X), the first large scale optimized stellarator, completed its initial experimental campaign in March 2016. An overview of the initial campaign will be presented with an emphasis on initial investigations of core transport and the role of the radial electric field profile (Er). In stellarator plasmas, the details of the profile are expected to have a strong effect on both the particle and heat fluxes. Neoclassical particle fluxes are not intrinsically ambipolar, which leads to the formation of a radial electric field ther enforces ambipolarity.
