Teaching and learning will be much different in the digital age from what we are used to. The knowledge explosion and advances in information and communications technology (ICT) in recent years have changed significantly the traditional roles of both the teacher and the student. With web-based technologies, for example, learning by exploration and self-paced learning are more likely to happen. Students in the information era will have to become more active and autonomous learners. Effective teachers will be those who can design learning environments to facilitate a variety of new styles of learning. To cope with these changes, there is a need to design and develop new systems that can support individualised and adaptive education and learning on the Web. This paper explains briefly the requirements, according to Brusilovsky, for an Adaptive Educational System and proposes an object model for designing a web-based Adaptive Educational System.
