It is recognised that a strength of the CIS academic community has been its willingness to come to terms with the pressure on its curriculum and teaching methodology brought about by the "evolutionary" nature of the discipline. This continuing need to avoid obsolescence in curriculum, which is produced by changing needs of industry and advances in research, is accompanied by other international and more local issues. A major factor that affects CIS education internationally is the difficulties that arise in dealing with the large numbers who are enrolled in classes and the ensuing problems with their teaching. Current research identifies several techniques which may be used to motivate and support CIS learning in such large groups. However it is argued here that some of these techniques are better implemented through web-based tutoring systems with the additional goal of the production of life long learning.
