Recent studies have indicated modal properties of bones canrnbe used to indicate health; however, such properties are difficultrnto measure. This paper presents a method for vibrationrntesting of bones that can be used to extract modal propertiesrnfor health monitoring. Specifically, this paper discusses analyzingrnsegments of bone in a laboratory environment as anrninitial phase to developing a health monitoring system forrncomplete bones in a clinical environment. The bone segmentsrnpresent several difficulties for testing because of theirrnsmall and lightweight size. These difficulties are circumventedrnusing recent advances in hardware. The bone segmentrnis mounted onto a PZT stack that vibrates with small amplitudernat high frequencies. The resulting vibrations are measuredrnusing non-contact sensing via a laser doppler vibrometer.rnThis setup has been used to compute modal properties ofrnbone segments at different levels of health.
