A surface tunnel was studied for the potential of assessingrnits modal behaviors as a possible condition assessmentrntechnique. The tunnel is a Portland cement concreternstructure lined with corrugated metal sheets. The one-way,rnsingle-lane tunnel has a 80-degree turn. A finite elementrnmodel was first constructed for the tunnel, and normal modernshape analysis was conducted to study the theoreticalrnmodal behavior of the tunnel. As a first approximation, onlyrnsimplified boundary conditions were used. Nornconsiderations of complex soil-structure interactions werernincluded. The tunnel was then tested using impactrnexcitation and ambient excitation to validate the finiternelement results. This research is part of a Great CitiesrnUniversities (GCU) Coalition transportation researchrninitiative to study the potential of using modal testing as arnNondestructive Testing (NDT) technique for tunnel structurernevaluation for inter-modal transportation systems.
