This paper summarizes neural network analyses used tornconstruct metamodels needed in various stages of damagerndiagnosis and prognosis. The first step of this metamodelrnconstruction is to build neural networks that can predict thernimpact location and the impact kinetic energy from dynamicrnstrain measurements on a structure. The second networkrnevaluates the initial damage state from the previouslyrnestimated impact location and energy. Then, the futurerndamage state is predicted based on the initial/currentrndamage state and some measure of future loadingrncharacteristics. The content of this paper mainly focuses onrnthe first step of the metamodeling: impact sourcernidentification. The problem of the impact source identificationrnconsists of source localization and impact velocityrnidentification. Two separate neural networks are constructedrnfor each of the two steps. The effectiveness of the proposedrnmetamodeling is demonstrated using data generated fromrnimpact simulation of a finite element model of a compositernplate and experimental data measured during actual impactrntests of a composite plate.
