A MULTI-MODEL UPDATING ROUTINE FOR LAYERED MATERIAL IDENTIFICATION

Layered materials are becoming increasingly important forrnthe production of high performance components andrnstructures. Their stiffness properties are needed in designrncalculations and are fundamental to assess stresses andrnstress concentrations. Numerous analysis techniques tornidentify the elastic properties of materials exist, but in therncase of layered materials, they can only yield propertiesrnthat are ‘averaged' over the thickness. To assess thernelastic properties of the individual layers of layeredrnmaterials, a new non-destructive testing method wasrndeveloped. The material properties are derived from thernresonance frequencies of a number of freely suspendedrntest plates, by means of a multi-model updating routine inrnwhich the FE-models of the different test specimen arernsimultaneously updated. Once the FE-models reproducernthe measured frequencies, the updating procedure can bernaborted, and the material properties of the different layersrncan be retrieved from the FE-model's database. Thernmulti-model approach is necessary to ensure thernuniqueness of the obtained properties.
