Iron content of brown rice of more than 180 rice materials has been determined and an iron-rich rice material has been screened in Rice Research Institute, Guangdong Academy of Agricultural Sciences. In those tested materials, the higher iron content rice with superior agricultural characters materials were used as restore line directly testcrossing with two-line sterile line such as Peiai 64S, Yu-S, Jinyue-S and GD-S on one hand, and the iron-rich rice, whose iron content is 52. 65 mg/kg, was used as parent hybridizing with high quality restore line on the other hand. Among the hybrid progenies of iron-rich rice and restore line, the plant families with excellent characters and uniform plant stature were selected to testcross with two-line sterile line mentioned above, then, through regular procedures the various FI hybrids are evaluated for yield, disease and insect resistance, grain quality, adaptability and other characters in order to decide which of those plant family to be used to get promising hybrid combination. The iron content of the combinations with superior characters was determined, and an iron-rich functional hybrid rice, whose iron content is 46. 6 mg/kg, has been developed.
