In information science, we lack a document representation theory. A knowledge import from writing research, Al, cognitive science and text theory leads to the formulation of an initial model of content analysis. We may regard content analysis as a particular case of writing. Then, its characteristic features are lying in the mode of content generation by derivation from an original document (subtasks scanning, selection, abstracting) and in the typical formulation of an abstract, an indexation or a classification code. The Kintsch/van Dijk model of text comprehension invites to model abstracting as a special case of summarizing, working with elementary procedures controlled by overall strategies. The resulting abstracting model is extended to the whole process of content analysis. As presented now, it outlines content analysis in broad terms. To attain a valid definition of the production processes - in other words a procedural theory - of content analysis, the specification must become much more detailed. Because such a model explains the intellectual techniques of human indexers and abstractors, it may help to enhance human performance. Moreover, it may contribute to the development of (partly) automated systems, as far as they follow a simulation approach.
