McGill University initiated in 1984, a major project to automate its network of 22 libraries. The NOTIS System was selected and the implementation process started in 1986. The Systems Office was created to undertake the complete automation process. With the implementation of an integrated system, the libraries are moving from a manual to a complete automated environment. The impacts have been identified in the libraries networking role, the decision making process, the redistribution of responsibilities, the simplification of the organizational structure and the complete review of work flow, simplification of operations and standardization of policies. The IS becomes the heart of the libraries around which administrative and technological changes will gravitate.
