A System Approach to Evaluate Mission Based Flight Performance of Air Ambulance Helicopters

The type of mission systems and the number of crew on board "air ambulance helicopters", are mission dependent. To evaluate the system effectiveness of the helicopter, with systems and crew on board, requires a holistic study of the mission capability, flight performance, reliability, maintainability and cost. A set of system methodologies are required to evaluate and integrate these parameters to study the mission effectiveness. In this paper a methodology is developed to evaluate the flight performance from a system perspective. The methodology is demonstrated by considering an example helicopter in an air ambulance role on an "incident medical response mission".
