Traditionally, acquisition projects in the South African mining and ore processing industry have followed an approach geared towards employing mature and well-known technology. Recently, De Beers recognised that this approach would not satisfy the needs of complex systems that employ more technically advanced diamond sorting technology. As a result De Beers established a new systems acquisition approach that includes systems engineering principles and related activities appropriate for projects of this nature. This new approach is the subject of this paper.
