Hydroforming of steel tubes is rapidly evolving as a very important manufacturingrnoperation, especially in automotive applications. Perhaps, this is due to the fact that tubularrnhydroformed components exhibit greater strength to weight ratio and lower costs comparedrnwith conventional stamped and welded assemblies. The characteristics of the input tubernare very critical for the success of the hydroforming process. Material properties such asrncomposition, weld type, yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, percent elongation and flowrncharacteristics are the essential parts for material responsiveness to hydroforming. Variousrncustomized test methods are being practiced to assess the materials ability for hydroforming.rnTwo such methods, bulge test and tensile test, are discussed in this paper. ERW tubesrnmade out of three grades of steels are taken for the investigation. Hydroformed ERW tubesrnopportunities in automotive industries are explored in this paper.
