This paper reviews the corrosion-related activities carried out by ACERINOX in three Europeanrnprojects addressing the feasibility of several austenitic and ferritic stainless steels to be used in thernmanufacturing of structural parts for buses, cars, and railway cars.rnThe first of the projects assessed the possible use of stainless steels in the fabrication of buses frames.rnJoint samples of two EN 1.4301 type austenitics, one of them modified for higher pitting corrosionrnresistance, a low-Ni, high-Mn austenitic grade and the EN 1.4003 ferritic were evaluated. In thernsecond project, focused on car making, homogeneous and dissimilar joints of different types werernsubjected to salt spray test and cyclic test. The joints featured different combinations of steel gradesrn(including two types of carbon steels), coating thicknesses and bonding method. The stainless gradesrnunder study were the austenitics EN 1.4301 and 1.4318 in two thicknesses and two structuralrnconditions (annealed and cold worked). The third project examined the construction of sandwichrnpanels made of combinations of cold worked EN 1.4318 and the modified EN 1.4301 steel alreadyrnused in the bus project for the construction of railway car floors.rnThe corrosion resistance investigations allowed to compare and rate different steel grades, structuralrnand surface conditions, joining systems, joint types (homogeneous and dissimilar), pointing outrnparticular aspects of these available options and the need of further study in some of them. From therncorrosion standpoint, the projects proved that the stainless steels can be suitable structural materialsrnfor the automotive sector. They also informed on the different materials-related characteristics thatrnmust be considered for the specific design and service of the stainless components. The results ofrnthese reasearch activities are expected to have yielded valuable information on the stainless steels asrnto materials selection and design purposes in the automotive sector.
