A range of Al alloys containing between 0 and 2 wt % of Mg, Sr and Si were investigated. Sheets of Al alloy were hot pressed with polycrystalline Al_2O_3 wafers to form lamellar structures that were subsequently subjected to a rapid thermal anneal treatment. Cross-sectional specimens were prepared from the lamellar structures and various transmission electron microscopy techniques were used to examine segregation of elements to the interfaces. In particular electron energy loss spectroscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy were used to determine the nature of the interfacial reaction products.
