In 1990 the IAEA initiated a programme to assist thecountries of eastern Europe and of the former Soviet Union inevaluating the safety of their first generation WWER-440/230nuclear power plants. The scope of the Programme wasextended in 1992 to include RBMK, WWER-440/213 andWWER-1000 plants in operation and under construction. Amajor result of the IAEA activities to date was theestablishment of international consensus on the list of safetyissues for WWER and RBMK NPPs and their rankingaccording to the safety significance. During 1995 and 1996 theIAEA has assisted Member States to review the completeness ofproposed safety improvements for these reactors. Guidance hasbeen provided for the resolution of generic safety issuesidentified. The IAEA is acting as technical adviser for theNuclear Safety Assistance Co-ordination, established by theG24 countries, to evaluate gaps and overlaps in the assistanceprojects.The objective of the IAEA activities in this area in theforthcoming years is to promote the exchange of information onthe safety of WWER and RBMK plants, to serve as aninternational forum for achieving a consensus on theappropriateness of the WWER and RBMK safetyimprovements, to compile, analyze and store plant specificinformation on WWER and RBMK safety improvements, and to assist in resolving generic WWER and RBMK safety issues.In the paper, an overview of the achievements of theprogramme to date is given as well as planned activitiesoutlined.
