Pentachlorophenol itself does not show any reactivity to DNA, but its final metabolite, tetrachloro-1,4-benzoquinone (TCBQ), has the capacity to damage DNA by forming DNA adducts. Furthermore, it had been reported that TCBQ or other halogenated quinones could produce hydroxyl radical (HO·) in the presence of H2O2 independent of transition metal ions. In this report, TFBQ (tetrafluoro-1,4-benzoquinone) as a model compound of TCBQ was first investigated because of its better activity. The photoelectrical DNA sensor we have previously reported can efficiently detect DNA adducts with 100 μM TFBQ and DNA oxidative damage induced by 100 μM TFBQ / 2 mM H2O2. Compared to gel electrophoresis, the sensor is more sensitive to detect the DNA oxidative damage, and DNA adducts can be obviously detected in the photoelectrochemical experiment.
