In this paper, a new minorbody sampling method is proposed. This is called 'a tethered sampling,' in which a tether technology is applied in order to meet several requirements and restrictions of science research and engineering system. The proposed sampling process includes the following phases: a) shooting a corer with tether, b) inserting the corer into a surface and collecting soil, and c) pulling back and retrieving the corer with tether. System requirements in the process of the method are investigated, and necessary performances of a tether control mechanism are addressed in particular. Moreover, initial experiments and numerical simulations on tether deployment and tether retrieving are conducted, and the results show that the proposed tethered sampling method has feasibility for minorbody exploration in deep space.
