Hybrid electric vehicles are putting greater demands than ever on the energy, power, cycle life, and cost of batteries. These new, challenging demands have generated equally new technology developments in an effort to meet them. Amtek Research International has developed a low-cost extrusion technology for manufacturing electrodes for batteries and supercapacitors. This technology, called Electroflex~®, is based on the continuous extrusion and extraction of porous films filled with active materials and is made possible by gel-processing of ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE). We describe how this technology has been used to manufacture electrodes for lithium ion batteries and supercapacitors.
