Development of Li-ion Polymer HEV and EV Battery Packs at LG Chem

LG Chem. has expanded its offerings of large size Li-ion polymer battery (LIPB) and pack systems to include transportation markets such as hybrid electric vehicles (HEV), electric bikes, electric scooters and electric wheel chairs. For HEV applications, new 5 Ah-class high power cell of Mn spinel/blended-carbon system has been developed to improve regenerative power densities as well as pulse cycle-life, as compared to the previous 7.5 Ah-class cell of Mn spinel/graphite system. Even at 30 C-rate, the battery can deliver over 85% of its nominal capacity. 152 V battery pack system consisting of 40 cells with battery management system (BMS) has also been developed by adopting a unique SOC estimation algorithm and more reliable devices for balancing and protecting the LIPBs. For small vehicles such as electric bikes, 10 Ah-class high energy LIPB and 26 V battery pack system with simple balancing and protection devices have also been developed. This paper presents the performances of LG Chem's promising technology of LIPB and pack systems for transportation applications.
