Following up the development of 36V-TM in VRLA presented 2 years ago at this conference, three technical leaps were reviewed as material optimization, BMS and new alloy for positive grid, and their technical evolutions and commercial applications were pursued. Metallurgical characterization revealed new alloy's sub-micron structures and battery durability tests demonstrated doubling life expectancy. The alloy was commercially applied to SLI batteries at first. 192V-battery pack of 16 12V-6.3Ah VRLA's was developed for a version of HEV passenger car which was launched by Suzuki Motor Corp., Japan early 2003 and some experiences of one-year on-road were taken. These developments in a few years enabled durability in varied cycle modes enhanced up to around one order, implicating lead-acid's frontier open to be cultivated.
