This paper has described some of the recent developments for Very High Power Li Ion. With this new technology engineers are defining new approaches to deliver smaller lighter systems with advanced capabilities that were only considered science fiction a few years ago. Li Ion is one of the more recent energy storage mechanisms and has become the choice for most consumer products. However the power and energy requirements for military applications exceed those needed for consumer applications by many orders of magnitude. Significant advanced have been made but studies have shown that even more capability will be found in this young technology. At the Directed Energy Professional Society meeting in 2003 there was a discussion about the future of lasers. One of the speakers suggested "That in 15 years lasers will be widely used for defense. And that the next generation of capability maybe "Photon Torpedoes" will be in the development phase like the laser of today". We expect that Li Ion will be part of that future.
