LiBOB (Lithium bis(oxalato) borate) is a recently developed [1] halogen-free conductive agent for application in Lithium and Lithium-ion batteries. More details on LiBOB have been summarized in reference [2]. The different surface chemistry of the BOB anion makes the LiBOB an unique salt, especially with regard to operation at higher temperature and safety features under abuse conditions. The key benefits of LiBOB are 1. Higher Safety against Mechanical Abuse 2. Improved Overcharge Protection 3. Extended Operational Lifetime at Elevated Temperatures4. Halogen-Free Environmentally Benign Battery Material 5. Lower Gassing in Formation Cycle Mechanical Abuse is one of the critical issues with large size batteries. The damage of a battery cell may result in internal shorts that can cause excessive temperatures. Here, the LiBOB offers very efficient protection, resulting in a lower amount of energy released upon mechanical damage.
