As most of you know, the AF&PA is a trade association with membership of over 200 companies involved in the manufacturing of pulp, paper and paperboard, operating sawmills, lumber mills and forest landowners - from small sawmill operators to large companies producing pulp and paper, wood products and lumber for building homes. The main function of the trade association is lobbying for the industry's interests and concerns for regulations affecting the daily operations of the companies. In addition, the Association is very active in areas pertaining to recycling, reforestation and concerns of the forest products, and statistical activities regarding the production of pulp, paper and wood products. Currently, 28 companies (representing nearly 96% of the total black liquor produced in the U.S.) which operate approximately 190 boilers in 117 mills in the United States are members of the AF&PA Recovery Boiler Program. The goal of the AF&PA Recovery Boiler Program continues to be, to improve the operation, maintenance, safety and efficiency of recovery boilers. From 1997 through early 2002 we had no recovery boiler explosions. Then, we had two. As you can see from this chart for explosions from 1958, we were averaging 3 to 4 explosions a year during the 1970's and 1980's. This chart reflects the changes in explosions and days of outage that resulted from the operating companies collectively working together. This was done in exchanging techniques and practices for improving safety and efficiency of the recovery boilers. The membership of the subcommittees consists of company representatives who are involved in the day-by-day operations. Their respective areas, such as operations and maintenance and research and development are devoted to these concerns.
