An extensive research program was conducted at the ATLSS Center, Lehigh University, to investigate the causes of brittle failures observed in welded connections during the 1994 Northridge earthquake and ways to improve their ductility. Tests on pre-Northridge connection details verified several weak links in the connection design and fabrication. Full-scale connection tests were carried out to develop improved details for welded unreinforced connections. These test results are presented, along with recommendations to insure ductile connection performance.
